Two Can Win (Fall 2007)

"On their debut LP, this Lawrence, KS five-piece play highly melodic, strummy pop, in the vein of bands such as Lemonheads, Apples In Stereo, and The Go-Betweens. Main singer/songwriter

Zach Hart resembles a cross between Evan Dando and Mark Kozelek, and pens some of the best songs. For example, "Penny" recalls Belle & Sebastian (and features George Brahlers

majestic, but way-too-brief trumpet), while the witty, self-mocking standout "Shit For Brains" has a catchy, sing-along chorus you won't get out of your head. Harts counterpart David Wetzel

is no slouch either, writing and singing a few such as the lovely, Brian Wilson-esque "Belong", and peppering each song with his twinkling piano playing. They keep the pop gems coming, and this

superb album never falters through nearly 40 sighing, swooning minutes." - The Big Takeover Magazine

"Getting dumped ain’t half bad when you can get in the car and listen to The Fairer Sex on your way out of town. Headed up by the songwriting duo of Zack Hart and

David Wetzel, the Lawrence band dwells in the same summery stratosphere as Belle and Sebastian, The Lucksmiths and The Old 97s. Songs built on acoustic guitars and keen lyrics

take on richer hues in the group’s home studio, where the group cut most of its new record “Two Can Win.” - Lawrence.com News

"Lawrence, Kansas quintet The Fairer Sex know a thing or two about getting to the point. Their twelve-song album, “Two Can Win” is a mere 38 minutes.

Keeping it short and sweet doesn’t take away from the gravity or the likability however. Folksy lyrics and indie pop atmospheres are painted with a dash of cunning inventiveness.

This is a rock band that doesn’t strip it all down for you but painfully lets you glimpse inside their emotional rollercoaster." - Smother Magazine

"We had to listen to this album a few times before we finally came to the conclusion that the music on Two Can Win is strangely reminiscent of the vastly underrated and

criminally overlooked band The Hang Ups. Considering the fact that The Hang Ups are one of our favorite bands of all time, this is a rather substantial compliment to the folks

in The Fairer Sex. This Lawrence, Kansas band consists of Tim Schapker, David Wetzel, Ed Epps, Zack Hart, and Charlie Naramore. This, their debut album, is a collection of pure, clean pop

tunes delivered with sincerity and style. These songs sound nothing like the current overproduced dribble churned out by all the carbon copy dime-a-dozen pop artists that the public adores.

These tracks are sparse and simple...and feature wonderfully gliding vocal melodies. Twelve inventive cuts including "At Last At Least," "Be Long," "Nadine," "The Days," and

"I Have a Friend Who Can Sail." Recommended. (Rating: 5++) - BabySue Reviews

"...when the cd plopped out of the padded manila envelope , just judging by the name (and the grainy photo on the press sheet) I was expecting some bad emo

but this is quite pleasant pop with strummy guitars and a general sense of careless abandon one used to feel when getting the girl’s number was the most important thing on your

mind. Had these guys existed in san Francisco in the late 90’s they would have been on every bull with The Aislers Set and The Fairways and wowed the fans at the S.F. Pop Fests. As it

is now with songs like “(The Conception of) Isabelle Flowers’ and “Penny” they should be wowing ‘em in Lawrence, KS ( the band’s hometown). I hear bits of The Feelies, Belle & Sebastian,

The Lucksmiths, and a few other faves. Nice to be knocked back a bit when I wasn’t expecting too much." - DAGGER Magazine

"Two Can Win" is the new work of the American The Fairer Sex, a band formed by David Wetzel, Ed Epps, Zack Hart, and Charlie Naramore, originating in Lawrence, Kansas. Its

music is characterized for being a mixture of rock of powerful guitars that are supported in the refrains and a melodic and smoother pop music effected by acoustics and choruses, all it

adorned with some bits of luminous folk in which they unfold in the twelve themes of the ones that is composed the album.

Its style is fresh and hooks already to the first one listens, although is necessary more than one to discover all the shades that contains. In practically half an hour of duration, the

band unfolds all their contained emotionality in songs as "At Last At Least", "Be Long", "Nadine", "The Days", or "I Have to Friend Who Can Sail", and they enter you in dense indie-pop

atmospheres. Although it is in pieces as "Penny" where they show all that capacity of composition, a direct theme, of rhythmic happy and that approaches them bands like Belle & Sebastian,

owed also by adding elements as a trumpet in part of the song that that summer and coloristic pop music approaches them.

The authenticity of The Fairer Sex situates in its immediacy, in those clean melodies and of a sincere and essential style, accompanied by multiple instruments,

and that really is thanked before other more pompous proposals put to the order of business.

An ideal disk for the lovers of the simplest things at the same time that beautiful, the ones that find the beautiful thing in the smallest and insignificant elements for the majority.

A work to listen at any moment of the day." - POPCHILD Magazine (Spanish Translation)
